What it means
Hand wash, in cool water, with a mild detergent — and stay out of the machine. On US tags this symbol is the maker saying the garment survived hand washing in testing, and nothing rougher. It shows up on the fabrics with the most to lose: wool and cashmere that felt, silk that waterspots, loose knits that stretch.
How to hand wash without resenting it
Fill a basin with cool water and a small squeeze of mild detergent. Submerge the garment, press it gently a few times, and let it sit ten minutes — soaking does the work agitation would. Rinse in cool water until it runs clear. Then press the water out flat between your palms or roll the garment in a dry towel; never twist it.
The whole job is fifteen minutes, most of it soaking. It is genuinely less effort than re-blocking a felted sweater, which cannot be done.
The delicate-cycle question, honestly
When the tag says hand wash, the machine’s delicate cycle is a gamble — sometimes fine, sometimes a felted sweater. Modern gentle cycles are gentler than they used to be, and plenty of people run hand-wash items through them in a mesh bag, cold, with the spin turned down, and get away with it. But “gets away with it” is the honest phrasing: the machine still agitates, agitation is what felts wool, and one unlucky cycle is permanent.

Can I machine wash something that says hand wash?
The tag says no, and the tag wins. In practice some people risk the gentle cycle — cold, in a mesh bag, low spin — and often get away with it, but wool can felt in one cycle and that damage is permanent. Hand washing is the tested route.
